TRAITORS ISLAND
While the majority of survivors were taken to Beacon Island, Pelsaert, Jacobsz, and some 40 men made camp on Traitors Island, immediately after the wreck occurred. They had managed to rescue some provisions including barrels of biscuit and some water.
Traitors Island is predominantly coral shingle and part of a group of small islands situated along Morning Reef that includes Sisters Rocks, Seal, Dakin, Saville-Kent, Hall, Far, Eastern and Dick’s Island. These islands would have been potential landing points for survivors after Batavia wrecked and during their subsequent escape from the mutineers. Today, these islands are uninhabited and their archaeological potential and interpretive values remain intact. The WA Museum visited Traitors Island during the 2000s and surface surveys did not reveal any cultural material. No archaeological excavation has been undertaken on the island.
