Corrosions is an exhibition by interdisciplinary artist Tineke Van der Eecken. This exhibition is a part of the Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia (JMGA) National Conference 2024, and the Indian Ocean Craft Triennial (IOTA) 2024.

Corrosions is a series of intricate works exploring the fragility of marine life. Van der Eecken presents corrosion castings alongside artworks created in fine metals such as copper and fine silver to highlight the preciousness of our oceans: from the endemic sea snakes from Exmouth Gulf to a ghost shark from the Southern Ocean and a seal pup from the North Sea. These delicate life forms are threatened by vast human-induced ecological changes including seismic blasts, dredging and drilling. We fish populations of sea life – living or dead – and dump new continents of waste, engulfing the ocean with plastic from its rippling surface to the very bottom of the deep sea. You are invited to dive into a world of complexity, gut and heart, grief and loss, joy and wonder.

Corrosion casting is a lab-based technique different from other forms of casting such as lost-wax casting more commonly used in jewellery and sculpture-making. In the development of this series Van der Eecken collaborated with scientists at the Minderoo Exmouth Research Lab as well as other scientists in Australia and in Belgium to create a series of corrosion castings of marine life.
