Japanese Gardens

During his travels to Japan, ex-teacher and arts lover Gabor Bedo has photographed many spectacular historic gardens; once exclusive to the nobility but now open to the public. Join Gabor in his discussion about temples, shrines, bath houses and statues, as well as indigenous and imported influences upon the design of gardens and their significance in Japanese culture.

 

Ichimatsu Dolls

Dr Jasmine Day, an anthropologist and doll collector, will engage participants in the curious history of Japanese dolls, with a focus upon the child dolls called Ichimatsu. These have served as international diplomats, featuring in the “Friendship Dolls” exchange between the United States and Japan.
