Explore the story of Brigadier Arnold Potts and the 21st Brigade of the Second AIF, whose actions during the defence of the Kokoda Trail during WWII became some of the most debated in Australia’s military history.
Pott's has been credited for "one of the most critical triumphs in Australian military history, and one that an apathetic nation has still to honour."
Despite leading his exhausted troops in a determined fighting withdrawal that ultimately stopped the Japanese advance, Potts was dismissed by General Sir Thomas Blamey. His removal, described by historians as one of the most disgraceful moments of Blamey’s career, left Potts’ contribution largely unacknowledged for decades.
Following his dismissal, Potts went on to command the 23rd Brigade during the Bougainville campaign, where he earned a reputation for his leadership and high standards.
Men of the Kokoda examines this period in history while highlighting the courage and compassion of the Papua New Guinean's who were critical to the survival of Australian troops. Fondly known as the 'Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels', this exhibition illustrates the vital work performed and the lifelong friendships developed between the Papuans and the Australians.
