Uncover the hidden history of the Great Southern wine industry with Rob Sippe.
Join historian, author, and expert grape grower and winemaker Rob Sippe as he shares his extensive knowledge on the development of the modern wine industry in the Great Southern.
While many are familiar with the region's contemporary wine story, this talk will focus on the lesser-known history leading up to it, including pre-British settlement interest from the Dutch East India Company as well as British and French explorers prior to settlement. Rob will also cover early commercial and amateur grape growing and winemaking, culminating in the Department of Agriculture’s trial planting at Forest Hill, Mount Barker in 1966.
Following the talk, you are invited to stay and purchase lunch and drinks at the Plantagenet Winery Cellar Door and café.
Presented by Rob Sippe, Redmond Vineyard.
Rob Sippe developed Redmond Vineyard on the family property at Redmond, south of Mount Barker with first plantings made in 1975 from cuttings from the Forest Hill trial planting. Wine from the vineyard was made by Plantagenet Wines under contract. Every commercial wine under the Redmond Vineyard label received awards in Australian Wine Shows. The property was sold in 1988.
Please note: This Curatorial will be held offsite at Plantagenet Wines, Lot 45 Albany Highway, Mount Barker.
