WA Museum puts West Australian wildlife in your hands

Please note that this app is currently unavailable as it undergoes a content review.

Get to know your local bugs, birds and beasts when the Western Australian Museum launches its new Field Guide to Western Australian Fauna app today.

This free app provides descriptions, photos, distribution maps and endangered species status of more than 250 species of birds, frogs, mammals and more, found on the land and in waters across Western Australia.

“The Field Guide is a portable resource with an abundance of information, readily accessible and easy to use in the Perth metropolitan area, country regions, on the water and in the remote outback,” said Morgan Strong, Manager of Online Services at the WA Museum.

“We’ve included common fauna such as the Willy Wagtail, iconic animals like the Quokka, and fauna such as the Mallee Tree Dragon that you may spot when off-roading or caravanning in remote areas. With easy navigation the app helps you discover fauna across the whole of WA – and it’s much lighter to pack than a hardcopy field guide.”

With current contributions from 22 scientists and 49 photographers in WA, as well as drawing on resources from across Australia, it’s been a huge collaborative effort to make this quality scientific information accessible at the touch of a button.

The resources within the Field Guide app will continue to grow as more species are added and new research and findings refine what is known about currently listed fauna.

Available for Apple and Android devices, the Field Guide to Western Australian Fauna app is part of a national project, funded by the Federal Government’s Inspiring Australia Unlocking Australia’s Potential science engagement grants, led by Museum Victoria.

Museums across Australia are rolling out their versions of the Field Guide app today, encouraging community participation in science and the environment.

The Inspiring Australia Field Guide app project is a collaboration between Museum Victoria, Australian Museum, Queensland Museum Network, Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Western Australian Museum, South Australian Museum, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and the Atlas of Living Australia. The result of the project is a series of eight Field Guide apps, one for each State and Territory, with unique content as well as content that overlaps with other apps.
