Meet the creator of the Naval Sea Power in Miniature exhibition and take time for reflection on Anzac Day about the historical context of these model warships.
During this special Anzac Day presentation, Gerry will share his knowledge about the historical ship stories and the intricate details and craftsmanship of these miniature naval vessels.
Get a close up look at the detail in miniature models of the Leeuwin and Koombana and marvel at many naval ship models in this unique exhibition; including large models of two of the most famous British warships, HMS Dreadnought and HMS Hood. Gerry Westenberg has created incredible miniature ship models spanning over 50 years of dedicated model-building. Discover the stories behind the meticulously constructed warships, their historical significance, and the passion that drove the Gerry to bring them to life.
Gerry has spent years researching the stories surrounding these naval warships in order to construct accurate models from scratch. There are many moving stories of ordinary and extraordinary service, and courage under fire that have inspired the creation of these battleship models.
If I am building a ship from a class of ships, I will often choose one that sank, as a way of paying tribute to those who went down with the ship. Unfortunately, this can be quite challenging, as there is usually a small number of photographs that I can use as a reference. I use photos as much as I can to inform my model building, as I have found over the years that many plans are drawn incorrectly and this is usually only discovered when you are half-way through the build.
