Dig Into the Past: Archaeology Workshop

Uncover ancient secrets and discover the science behind archaeology!

This school holidays, join a hands-on workshop where you'll explore the tools and techniques archaeologists use to unlock stories from the past. With a special focus on the Terracotta Warriors, follow the incredible journey of their discovery and the real-world challenges faced by archaeologists on site.

Get ready to excavate, analyse, and curate - just like a real archaeologist!

What to Expect

  • Introduction to Archaeology: Learn the basics of archaeology and why preserving history matters.
  • History of the Terracotta Warriors: Discover the story behind the Terracotta Army, created to protect China's first emperor in the afterlife.
  • Hands-On Excavation: Participate in a simulated dig - survey, record and document artefacts with care and precision.
  • Artefact Analysis: Examine your discoveries and learn how archaeologists interpret clues from the past.
  • Artefact Reconstruction: Practice simple techniques to piece together broken artefacts.
  • Curate a Museum Display: Step into the role of a museum curator and create a mini exhibition of your findings.

Whether you're a budding historian, a curious explorer, or just love getting hands-on - this workshop is a chance to dig deep and make exciting discoveries.

All you need to bring is your lunch and water bottle - we’ll provide everything else.

Please note this workshop does not include entry to the Terracotta Warriors: Legacy of the First Emperor exhibition.

Drop and Leave Holiday Programs

Drop and leave programs enable children and young people to experience the Museum independently, discover and learn something new in an area of interest and access materials and resources that would not normally be available at home.
