This National Science Week, step inside the Biggest Science Lab Ever! and discover how science begins with curiosity, questions, and the seeds of ideas that grow into something much bigger.

Throughout the day, Level 3 at WA Museum Boola Bardip transforms into a hands-on space for all ages. Explore, experiment, and take part in interactive science activities led by staff from both the Museum and external organisations. Try things out, make connections, and see how research unfolds.

From small sparks of curiosity to big discoveries, this is science in action. Whether you’re a budding scientist or just science-curious, there’s something here to explore, question, and enjoy together.

Who's sowing the seeds of science on the day?

WA Museum Scientists

Bone Sorting Station: Sort and identify real fossil bone fragments of small mammals and birds found in caves on the Nullabor plain - just like Museum scientists. The sorting activity will be led by WA Museum Scientists so you can ask all your fossil and mammal-related questions!

Fossil Show & Tell: See fossils from WA and overseas from the age of dinosaurs. Touch real fossil poo and see photos taken during fieldwork across Australia. Meet a palaeontologist and find out how you can become one too!

Curtin University

Space Explorers: Mars is a long way from home, and every decision counts when you’re exploring a new world. Participants step into the role of mission controllers, analysing three pieces of rover code to determine which program will collect rock samples, and which will navigate a set path across the planet’s surface.

ECU

Conservation Biology: Join ECU to learn more about native animals and their habitats.

The Kids Research Institute

Step into the world of medical research with The Kids Research Institute Australia! Through hands-on activities discover how scientists are helping children live healthier lives. Meet the researchers and experience the wonder of science in action.

Engineers Australia

Design Your Own F1 Car: Put your engineering skills to the test by designing and modifying your own mini F1 car. Experiment with different nose shapes, spoilers and weights, then race your car down a ramp to see how far it can go. Learn how forces, friction and aerodynamics influence performance as you test, refine and improve your design.

Hydraulic Arm Challenge: Discover the power of hydraulics by controlling a fluid powered arm remanufactured from waste materials. Work together as a team or individually to complete a series of tasks while learning how hydraulic pressure can be used to create movements.

UWA Girls+ in Engineering

Biomimicry Design Challenge: Become an engineer for the day and tackle a real-world design challenge using inspiration from the amazing adaptations found in nature. Explore biomimicry through a hands-on experiment, discover engineering specialties, and create your own innovative solution!
