Discover the Activities
Step back in time and uncover the secrets of Australia’s prehistoric past. In this hands‑on activity, young explorers get to roll up their sleeves and uncover real fossils of Diprotodon, Australian megafauna uncovered at the Du Boulay Creek site in northern WA.
The excavation activity will be led by a real-life palaeontologist working at the WA Museum so you can ask all your fossil-related questions.
Join us on Level 3 for this activity suitable for ages 6 and up. Numbers are limited to eight participants for each 10-minute session. Registrations will be taken on the day on a first-come, first-served basis.
Get hands-on with the past and become a junior palaeontologist! Fossick through the sand to uncover a buried fossil, then take your find to the Fossil Prep Station where you’ll use simple tools to carefully chip and brush away the surrounding matrix — the rock or sediment that surrounds a fossil.
What’s hidden inside? A bone, tooth or something unexpected? Take your time, work carefully and see what you can reveal. Just like real fossil preparators, you’ll need patience, a steady hand and a keen eye to uncover the details hidden within your fossil block.
Join us outside in City Room for this activity. Remember to bring a hat, as we will be outdoors! Fossil finding can get messy, bring an extra t-shirt. Suitable for all ages. No need to book, meet at the Fossil Dig area to have a go.
Create your own roaring Carnotaurus hat! Colour, pop out, and assemble the pieces to make a wearable dinosaur hat, then wear your creation as you explore the Museum.
Join us in the Coty Room for this activity. A fun, creative activity for dinosaur fans of all ages. No need to book, collect your craft hat and get creative.
Go behind the scenes of the world premiere exhibition Dinosaurs Uncovered with curators from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Discover how palaeontologists, researchers, fossil preparators and museum professionals uncover and interpret the stories of some of the most extraordinary creatures to have ever lived.
This exclusive curator talk offers a rare insight into the work of palaeontologists, fossil preparators, researchers and museum professionals who help uncover, interpret and share the stories of some of the most extraordinary creatures to have ever lived. Learn how fossils are discovered, prepared and studied, and explore the critical role curators play in transforming scientific research into engaging museum experiences.
Set against the backdrop of the Late Cretaceous period, the discussion will delve into the science behind the exhibition, the challenges of developing a world premiere showcase, and the latest discoveries that continue to reshape our understanding of dinosaurs and the ancient ecosystems they inhabited.
The Curator Talks will run in Hackett Hall at 11.30am and 2.30pm, for 45 minutes and are suitable for ages 12 and up. No need to book, first come first served.
Join us for an interactive dinosaur-themed Storytime featuring stories, sensory touch boxes and hands-on discovery. Set within the vibrant Museum galleries, it's the perfect way to immerse toddlers in the magic of storytelling, surrounded by colour, culture and creativity. With a welcoming atmosphere and touch boxes for sensory play, each session invites children to listen, explore and connect.
Storytime & Touch boxes will take place on Level 3 at 10.30am - 11am each day. Suitable for young children and their families. No need to book, just find a spot and enjoy some dino tales.
