Step Into the Living Heart of the Rainforest
Enter a realm where art, science, and technology converge as WA Museum Boola Bardip’s Jubilee Hall transforms into a portal to the extraordinary through Biomass - an immersive gallery showcasing some of the most daring virtual reality and interactive installations from across the globe.
As part of this sensory journey comes Gondwana, a one-of-a-kind durational event unfolding gently over six days. Immerse yourself in a virtual representation of the Daintree - the world’s oldest tropical rainforest - alive with shifting weather, seasons, and biodiversity. Explore ancient trees, rugged mountains, and idyllic beaches in a vast ecosystem that responds to time and presence.
Over the course of the showing, the rainforest begins to degrade, artistically visualizing climate projections up to the year 2090. Yet, the more time audiences spend with the forest, the more resilient it becomes. Your collective act of bearing witness pushes back against decline, offering hope in the face of change.
Gondwana is both an immersive installation and a VR experience, available in bookable 20-minute sessions.
About the Artists
Ben Joseph Andrews and Emma Roberts are a new media artist duo from Wathaurong Country in regional Victoria. Their work - spanning installation, performance, project and immersive theatre - explores the liminal space between physical and digital.
Major works include Gondwana (2022), which opened at Sundance before showing at Adelaide Festival, ACMI, SxSW, Wales Millennium Centre, Experimenta’s 2025-7 Triennial, and Kunsthal Charlottenborg among others, and Turbulence: Jamais Vu (2023), which won the top prize at IDFA DocLab, was invited to the Venice Biennale of Cinema’s Best of VR program, and is nominated for the Annwn, a global immersive art prize.
The pair are artists in residence at the Centre for Projection Art, and recently received the National Regional Arts fellowship. They’ve spoken for NYU Tisch, Heide, Experimenta, and MIT and mentored for Expand Lab, Immersive Arts UK,CPH:LAB, and Screenwest.
