What happens when we mix things together? How can we build tall towers? What sounds can we make?
Join us for our Curious Minds program and use your senses to find out about the world around us with hands-on investigation activities, play, craft, story and museum exploration!
Curious Minds is a STEM-based early years program linked to the Early Years Learning framework. Each week, the program focuses on a different concept to investigate and ask questions about, promoting the use of our senses, creativity, critical thinking, and communication. Every session involves 45 minutes of educator-led activities (including movement, storytelling, and hands-on creative projects), with the opportunity to take home what you make. The final 15 minutes are spent visiting the focus of our session in the Museum.
Little Learners takes place on Level 3 every Tuesday and Thursday during term time from 9.45 am - 10.45am.
Ticket holders receive a $3 regular coffee at the Museum's Epoch Cafe located along Beaufort Street*. Please note that alternative milk options may incur a surcharge.

Week 1 | 17 & 19 September — Messy Mixtures
Get ready to get messy as we become chemists! What happens when you mix different colours together? Explore mixtures and make some slime to take home. We'll finish this week with a visit to the Ngallang Koort Boodja Wirn gallery.
Week 2 | 24 & 26 September — Float or Sink?
What happens to different objects in water? What floats and what sinks? Using our 'think, make, try' mindset, we'll make our own boats and see if they float! We'll finish this week with a visit to the Connections gallery. This week's session will take place on Level 1 near the carnotaurus.
Week 3 | 1 & 3 October — Lights and Mirrors
Explore mirrors and all the things they can do. What can we see with them? Do some experimenting and make a kaleidoscope to take home. We’ll finish the week with a visit to the Lighthouse on Level 1.
Week 4 | 8 & 10 October— Early Years Engineers
How can we build a really tall tower? It's time to build 'em up, have fun with loose parts, play and take home a clay creation. We'll finish the week with a visit to the Innovations gallery.
Week 5 | 15 & 17 October — Sensational Sounds
What sounds do we hear around us? Can we change sounds or even create new ones? Explore sound and make a new instrument to take home. We’ll finish this week with a hunt for animal calls in the Wild Life gallery.
Week 6 | 22 & 24 October — Colour and Pattern
What colours and patterns can we see around us? We’ll develop our early maths skills, match and sort, and make beading patterns to take home. We’ll finish this week by doing a colour hunt in the Reflections gallery.
Week 7 | 29 & 31 October — Fantastic Forces
What forces do we use every day? Explore pushing and pulling, magnetism, and using forces to make amazing artwork. We'll finish this week with a visit to the Origins gallery.
Week 8 | 5 & 7 November — Forensic Investigators
Something is missing from the Little Learners area! We'll be forensic investigators looking for evidence to match, sort, and test. Then, follow the clues to find out who dunnit! Once we figure out the culprit, we'll go to find them in the gallery!
