Friday 5 April | Discovering NASA's Artemis program with Professor Phil Bland

NASAs Artemis Program has set out a roadmap for a new era of human and scientific exploration of the Moon, with the goal of catalyzing an off-Earth space economy and building a foundation for human exploration of the rest of the solar system. In this talk, Prof Bland will provide an overview of Artemis, and what the next decade of space exploration might look like.

Friday 3 May | Origins of the Moon with Professor Katarina Miljkovic

The origin of the Moon was a mystery until Apollo astronauts brought back samples revealing that the Moon and the Earth are essentially made from the same stuff. The conclusion was that the Moon had to have come from the Earth! The leading theory suggests that a giant planetesimal struck the Earth during its early geological formation and ejected material that seeded the Moon. This lecture explores the impact origin of the Moon.

Friday 7 June | Unlocking the Cosmos: Multi-messenger Astronomy and the New Era of Cosmic Exploration

In the vast expanse of the universe, cosmic phenomena like gamma-ray bursts emit signals across multiple messengers - from electromagnetic waves to gravitational waves, offering us a unique window into the most energetic and enigmatic events in the cosmos. The field of multi-messenger astronomy uses these diverse signals to unveil the mysteries of the universe's most violent processes. This lecture will delve into the heart of multi-messenger astronomy, highlighting its potential to decipher the intricate mechanisms driving these cosmic phenomena. It will introduce the topic from the groundbreaking joint observation of a gravitational wave event and a gamma-ray burst in 2017 through to the launch of a new gamma-ray satellite, MoonBEAM, dedicated to multi-messenger astronomy and positioned at a strategic Earth-Moon Lagrange point.

Friday 14 June | The Moon is a telescope for radio astronomers, with Steven Tingay

We see the Moon in visible light. But how does the Moon look to a telescope that uses radio waves? You might be surprised. The Moon can be used to study the early Universe, over 13 billion years ago. And to detect some of the most energetic particles in the Universe, neutrinos. Or to estimate how strong radio signals from Earth might appear to aliens on other planets. With the most powerful radio telescope in the world soon to be established in Western Australia, the Square Kilometre Array, the Moon will be an interesting target for radio astronomers.

Friday 21 June | Winter Moon Solstice
