Over four thousand years ago, two powerful Viziers of Egypt's 6th dynasty, Iuu and his son Weni, were buried in enormous mastaba tombs at Abydos.

They lived, serving as high-ranking officials, at the end of the Old Kingdom. At a time just before the country disintegrated into warring factions. Their monumental and exquisitely decorated tombs remained hidden for centuries - until their rediscovery in 1999 and 2007.

Join Heather Tunmore as she takes you back in time, sharing images from the excavation and explaining the structure and function of a mastaba tomb (a rectangular structure with flat roof).

Why were these high-ranking officials buried in the provinces? Join this Meet the Museum talk to find out!

Heather Tunmore is an Honorary Associate of the WA Museum and Epigrapher for the Abydos Middle Cemetery Project, Michigan University. She has extensive experience working in Egypt and will share her insights, including the realities of fieldwork in Egypt.
