Exclusive Live Cross from the High Seas: Meet the Scientists aboard OceanXplorer.
Join us for a live broadcast direct from OceanXplorer, the research vessel featured in our current OceanXperience exhibition.
Currently at sea on the OceanX-led High Seas: Roo Rise 2026 expedition, OceanXplorer is navigating the South of Java region in the eastern Indian Ocean, near Christmas Island. This live cross will connect you directly to the WA Museum and OceanX scientists working aboard the vessel as they carry out research in one of the ocean's most remote and least understood regions.
Hosted by Ben O'Shea, you will meet the scientists, hear about life aboard the world-class vessel and learn how researchers are using cutting-edge science and technology to explore the deep.
Ask a Scientist
Ever wondered:
- What creatures live thousands of metres below the ocean surface?
- How do scientists explore the deep sea?
- What is it like to live and work on a research vessel for weeks at a time?
- Why are scientists studying the High Seas?
Now is your chance to ask.
Visitors will be able to speak directly with members of the expedition team, including WA Museum aquatic scientists, and submit questions live during the broadcast.
About the Expedition
From 4 – 27 July, a team of WA Museum scientists will be joining High Seas: Roo Rise 2026 – an OceanX-led expedition aboard the R/V OceanXplorer – to explore the poorly understood seamount and oceanographic systems in the eastern Indian Ocean, south of Java in the High Seas and around Christmas Island.
The expedition is building a scientific baseline for one of the most important, and least understood, high-seas regions that is of interest to surrounding countries based on its identification as an Ecologically and Biologically Significant Area (EBSA). The information collected will improve understanding of biodiversity, seamount ecosystems, ocean productivity and ecological connectivity while contributing to future high seas conservation discussions.
Bringing together OceanX, Minderoo Foundation, Minderoo OceanOmics Centre at UWA, the Western Australian Museum, the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University Singapore, Aotearoa Science Agency, the Living High Seas Initiative, and regional partners, the expedition demonstrates how collaboration can accelerate science and expand our understanding of the ocean.
