We classify things in our daily lives all the time, often without even thinking about it  like the urge to sort and label the food jars in the cupboard.

Put simply, taxonomy refers to the classification of things to help make sense of the world, and is a dynamic science that draws on cutting edge techniques to describe and classify forms of life. Accurate classification and naming of species supports much biological and ecological research and is fundamental to our understanding of the world's biodiversity.

Find out more about this fascinating field of science from the collection of specimens, examining them closely in the lab before determining what species they are.

Throughout the day we’ll explore the topic using a range of equipment, materials and hands-on activities, including the naming of species through the use of binomial nomenclature.

This workshop is for those who have always wanted to know more about the topic, but have been reluctant to name it!
