WA AIDS Memorial Quilt

This World AIDS Day, join the WA Museum, WAAC and the wider HIV-affected community to commemorate the Western Australians whose lives have been impacted by HIV and AIDS.

Each year on 1 December, the WA Museum displays the original, hand-crafted WA AIDS Memorial Quilt in recognition of World AIDS Day. Created by the community, its individual panels share personal stories of love, loss, resilience and remembrance. With the continued support of WAAC and community, the Museum has brought the Quilt into the 21st century by digitally capturing the stories behind each of the panels.

The interactive Digital AIDS Quilt features interviews with the family, friends and acquaintances of people commemorated in the original Quilt. It also shares insights from experts and community members, providing further context and contributing to a deeper understanding of the history and ongoing impact of HIV and AIDS in Western Australia.

The original Quilt shares powerful stories of resilience and love in the face of adversity through the individually hand-crafted panels. The Digital AIDS Quilt ensures the strength of human connection and community spirit developed through the original Quilt, can live on for many years to come.
