Yamaji Art and Ku’Arlu Mangga art centres collaborate for the first time with their exhibition ‘Yamaji Yanajingmanha Barna/Uthudu’.
Yamaji Country is home to a rich and diverse cultural heritage belonging to a number of language groups. Yamaji Yanajingmanha on Barna/Uthudu – Yamaji coming together on Country, is an exhibition of two art centres, Yamaji Art and Ku’Arlu Mangga, who together, share their own unique perspectives and responses to the revival of long sleeping traditions, practices and personal histories.
Together, the art centres showcase contemporary cultural belongings through the revival of body adornments and traditional kangaroo skin cloaks created by Yamaji Art and the complemented by Ku’Arlu Mangga’s more contemporary storytelling mediums through print making and large scale message sticks.
Whilst the practices may have been sleeping, cultural belongings stretch back deep in time and recently there has been a movement that now sees the cultural practices that binds us to our ancestors revived and being paralleled across time.
Gathering materials from Country, intergenerational learning, interconnectedness, creating a community of storytelling through both art centres and works, the past, the present and the future are all intertwined and Gulamanmanha.
