Join us in this science series where curious kids build, test, solve and experiment their way through robotics, mysteries, magnets and more.
Delivered in partnership with Curtin University, this school holiday workshop series brings science to life through fun, hands-on activities. From robotics and forensics to chemistry, magnets and environmental science, each session invites kids to explore, experiment and discover how science works in the real world.
Workshops
Tuesday 13 January | Robo Rumble
Step into the world of mechatronics where creativity meets problem-solving. Using LEGO components and block-based coding, participants will design, build, and program their own robots to take on a series of fun, hands-on challenges. It’s a playful introduction to engineering and coding that encourages teamwork, experimentation, and big ideas.
Thursday 15 January | Magnet morning
Discover the surprising science and peculiarities behind magnets in a morning of experiments and exploration. Through hands-on activities, participants will solve a magnet maze, test everyday objects for magnetic properties, uncover the role of iron in food, and even make objects “fly.” Finish the session by creating a magnet to take home.
Tuesday 20 January | Bio Blitz
A morning all about the cultivated and wild Flora and Fauna of the Museum! Participants will explore both cultivated and wild species, learn how scientists monitor biodiversity, and use machine learning tools and Life Libraries to identify as many different species of flora and fauna in the museum as possible, and upload their findings to a real research database!
Thursday 22 January | Sugar Rush
A fun, hands on, mining activity. Participants will attempt the sugar rush challenge, where they will try to identify the locations of sugar deposits in a tub of sand using real exploratory geology techniques, extract their chosen stope and then figure out how much sugar they've mined and how to extract it from the sand.
Tuesday 27 January | The curious case of Rossa Herring
A crime mystery thriller! Participants will act as forensic investigators and analysts, and use real forensic analysis and techniques in an attempt to crack the curious case of Rossa Herring. From observation to deduction, this immersive session brings science to life through critical thinking and hands-on investigation.
Thursday 29 January | Sunset in a Bag
Mix, shake, and learn in this deliciously fun chemistry morning. A fun hands on chemistry activity in which attendees will make a vibrant sunset/delicious icecream in a ziploc bag they can take home and learn about the basics of chemical reaction/phase changes.
Participants aged 12 and under must be supervised by a parent or guardian.
All required materials are provided.
