Join artist-in-residence Erin Coates for a fun morning workshop that combines collage and graphite drawing.
Exploring found imagery in vintage nature books is a great way to start a new artwork and avoid the ‘blank page’ syndrome when beginning a drawing. Be guided through different approaches to designing a composition and developing artwork concepts.
Once your collaged elements are glued down, Erin will demonstrate techniques for extending the imagery with graphite drawing which focuses on human and animal biology.
Enjoy complimentary morning tea as you enjoy this artistic workshop.
About the Artist
Erin Coates is a visual artist and creative producer living in Boorloo / Perth and is currently undertaking ART ON THE MOVE’s Activating Collections Artist Residency at the Museum of the Great Southern. Erin is developing new artworks exploring the intersection of natural history and human narrative. During her residency, she is keen to hear from locals about their experiences encountering or collecting the remnants of fauna; unidentifiable creatures on the beach, animal skulls, shark teeth, beached whales, insect nests in the walls of a home. Do you have a story to share?
Erin has held solo exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Western Australia and Perth Institute of Contemporary Art and in 2022 she was commissioned by the Biennale of Sydney to create new work. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia, Canada and is represented by Moore Contemporary.
Participants are asked to bring their own graphite pencils. The recommended kit to bring along includes:
- Any H grade pencil, HB, 2B, 4B – although any pencils are still suitable.
- Pencil sharpener and eraser
- Your favourite craft knife or scalpel for cutting collage
Note:
- Some box cutters and all other materials will be provided.
- Morning tea is provided.
