While we remember those who lost their lives in conflict, it is also important to recognise the lasting impact of war on those who returned home and the families who supported them.
On the eve of Remembrance Day, we will look at how war impacted those who returned with life-changing injuries, both physical and mental, and what was done to assist them. This will include information about the charities such as the Lord Roberts' Memorial Workshops, the Red Cross and St. Dunstans and the repatriation hospitals which supported and retrained disabled and blinded servicemen and women.
We will also remember the families of those who lost loved ones or who welcomed home family members who were not the same as when they left.
Presented by John and Kathryn Shapland, Recollections of War.
About your presenters
Recollections of War has spent the past 17 years collecting stories and artefacts from around the world, sharing the human experiences behind the tragedy of war through letters, photographs, diaries, uniforms and personal belongings. The collection includes thousands of artefacts being catalogued and digitised to support students, researchers, family historians, artists and the wider community. Through their research, Kathryn and the team have also uncovered connections to Western Australian families and Albany’s history, preserving important stories of the region’s contribution to times of conflict.
