Aboriginal storytelling from Cleverman on show at the Museum of the Great Southern

An exhibition celebrating Aboriginal storytelling opens at the Museum of the Great Southern on Sunday 12 June.

The Cleverman exhibition is based on the dystopian sci-fi series that stormed onto ABC TV in 2016.

With a predominantly Aboriginal cast and senior crew, the series explores a range of Aboriginal origin stories in a contemporary context with political nuance, touching on themes of class, racism and power.

Museum of the Great Southern Regional Manager Catherine Salmaggi said with an immersive combination of video, audio and objects, this exhibition invites visitors to listen and be immersed in a powerful and contemporary expression of Aboriginal origin stories.

“This exhibition not only explores the making of Cleverman but the Dreaming stories that underpin it,” Ms Salmaggi said.

“The exhibition delivers thought-provoking messages while exploring the show’s sets, costumes and props.”

The exhibition has been curated by Cleverman concept creator Ryan Griffen, production designer Jacob Nash and Kat Clarke together with ACMI.

ACMI Director and CEO (2015 – 2022) Katrina Sedgwick OAM said over the past decade, ACMI has been curating and touring exhibitions across Australia that celebrate extraordinary Australian screen practice and practitioners.

“The ground-breaking series Cleverman presents Dreaming stories in a stunningly designed sci-fi near-future, laced with political themes that ring true today,” Ms Sedgwick said.

“We jumped at the opportunity to collaborate with series creator Ryan Griffen to create an exhibition that takes people behind-the-scenes to explore the storytelling and superb screen craft that delivered this remarkable Indigenous Australian TV series.”

Cleverman is a free exhibition and will be on display at the Museum of the Great Southern from Sunday 12 June to Sunday 9 October 2022.

Entry to the Museum is by donation.
