Australia and Indonesia Museum-to-Museum Collaboration

In November, the Western Australian Museum worked with the Australian Embassy and the Indonesian Heritage Agency to deliver a two-day workshop on museum management and curatorial practice at the National Museum of Indonesia in Jakarta.

The workshop followed an earlier session held in August at the Fort Vredeburg Museum in Yogyakarta, forming part of an ongoing exchange between Australian and Indonesian museum professionals. Designed to be practical, participants worked directly with collections to explore how curatorial decisions are made, recorded and shared.

Western Australian Museum staff Dr Melanie Piddocke, Director, Culture and Communities, and Erica Boyne, Head of History, worked alongside Indonesian museum professionals throughout the program.

A key element of the workshop was the application of Significance 2.0, the framework used to assess the meaning and value of museum collections. Participants explored how the guide can be used across everyday museum work, from collection management to interpretation. The Indonesian edition of Significance 2.0 has been fully translated and adapted through the Australia Indonesia Museums Project, with new case studies and provenance research drawn from Indonesian collections.

Together, the Jakarta and Yogyakarta workshops strengthened professional connections between museums in Australia and Indonesia, supporting long-term collaboration built on shared knowledge, practical experience and mutual respect.
