Ever wondered how the WA Museum discovers and preserves Western Australia's most precious objects? Find out in a series of free behind-the-scenes tours at the WA Museum Shipwreck Galleries in Fremantle from Tuesday May 21.
In celebration of National Archaeology Week and the Fremantle Heritage Festival, the WA Museum’s maritime archaeologists and conservators will show you the laboratories, equipment and processes they use to prepare historic and archaeological artefacts before they are displayed in the Museum.
WA Museum Head of Maritime Archaeology, Jeremy Green, said the tours will offer a rare insight into the volume of work that goes on between the initial search for shipwrecks and the items going on public display.
Highlights of the tour will include fresh findings from the Maritime Archaeology department’s recent trip to the Batavia shipwreck site in the Abrolhos.
The tours will take place at 2pm on Tuesday 21 May, Thursday 23 May, Tuesday 28 May and Thursday 30 May.
The tours are free and will run for approximately one hour. No bookings are required; simply meet in WA Museum Shipwreck Galleries foyer ten minutes prior to start time
