Children get free entry to Maritime Museum ahead of school holidays

Changes to general admission fees at the WA Maritime Museum will give children under 15 years free entry to the Museum’s permanent galleries, just in time for the April school holidays.

WA Museum CEO Alec Coles said the new fee structure was being introduced from 9 April, 2016.

“Scrapping general admission charges for children to encourage greater visitation from our younger audiences was recommended in a review of fees,” he said. “This will be balanced with an increase in other admission fees, to help offset running costs at the site, and forms part of the Government’s Agency Expenditure Review process.

“The Maritime Museum will continue to offer outstanding value to visitors, whether WA youngsters and their families, or tourists from interstate and overseas.”

Mr Coles said general admission fees for adults would rise from $10 to $15, the first time they had increased since the Maritime Museum opened 14 years ago, in 2002.

“These changes also include the scrapping of general admission fees for self-guided school groups to the Maritime Museum, as part of the wider WA Museum’s ongoing commitment to education and encouraging life-long learning,” he said.

“We understand that access to the State Collection is important for everyone, which is why we will also continue to have regular days where entry for everyone is by donation.”

This April’s school holiday program at the Maritime Museum includes the hugely popular Junior Fishing Clinic with Recfishwest; unlocking the secrets of Morse code as part of the Submerse Yourself activities; and discovering the incredible structural achievements of history through six simple machines that made them possible.
