Clem Burns Heritage Awards winners announced

Following an outstanding array of entries from local primary school children, the Western Australian Museum - Geraldton awarded the winners of the 23rd Annual Clem Burns Heritage Awards on Friday, 27 July 2012.

WA Museum Education Officer Mary Callaghan said this year’s awards; open annually to primary school children in years 3 to 7 from the Mid-West region, focussed on creating models showing the many varieties of sustainable energy in use today.

“The models demonstrate the students have an excellent understanding of the kinds of sustainable energy currently available to homes, business and industry, as well as looking to those that could be developed in the future” Ms Callaghan said.

The main prize and honour board was presented to overall winner Emma Beveridge, a Year 6 student from Mt Tarcoola Primary School in Geraldton.

The judging panel said Emma’s neatly presented and clearly labelled ‘Energy Wise Home’ reflected excellent research and demonstrated a number of energy efficient practices that can be easily implemented for everyday living.

Other category winners were Beccy Johnston and Kaylee Gray, also from Mt Tarcoola Primary School, and Charlie Simpson and Ellie Rutter from Geraldton Primary school.

The Verve Energy Innovation Award was presented to the Year 6/7 and Year 7 Mt Tarcoola Primary School classes.

Highly commended certificates were awarded to students from Waggrakine, Eneabba, Rangeway, and Allendale Primary Schools.

This year’s awards were presented to the students by special guest Ms Liz Matek, the daughter of Clem Burns whom the Awards are named after.

Clem Burns AO was the first Administration Officer of the WA Museum – Geraldton from 1973 until he retired in 1980. During this time he helped provide logistical support for the marine archaeological work on the Abrolhos Islands.

All models, including those of the winners and highly commended, can be seen on display at the WA Museum - Geraldton until Sunday 19 August, 2012.
