Celebrate International Museum Day this Sunday 18 May at your local Western Australia Museum and connect with YOUR WA museum through our exciting range of collections.
Entry to most WA Museum sites is free every day, but on Sunday entry to the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle will be free, too. In addition, all activities in the Play-laeontology Zone at the WA Museum – Perth will be free for all visitors who buy a ticket to the amazing and record-breaking Dinosaur Discovery exhibition.
There is also a range of events, exhibitions and entertainment to engage people of all ages, so whatever your passion you’re bound to find an artefact or activity of interest at your local WA Museum this weekend, whether it is in Perth, Fremantle, Albany, Kalgoorlie-Boulder, or Geraldton.
The WA Museum actively embraces this year’s International Museum Day theme that museum collections make connections,
WA Museum CEO Alec Coles said.
“Very careful consideration is given to how we showcase our collections, and how we can engage with all West Australians and, of course, visitors to WA. We are continuously looking for new and innovative ways to share the incredible stories of our State and our world.
“A great example of this is our Dinosaur Discovery exhibition, where visitors can immerse themselves in what we believe were the habitats of the Cretaceous period - and meet face to face some of the dinosaurs and other animals that lived at that time. As part of the exhibition the Museum has developed an augmented reality app to provide visitors with a totally interactive museum experience.
"This is an important time for the WA Museum with the affirmation of commitment to the New Museum in the State Budget. As we develop the New Museum it will be more important than ever to connect with our communities."
A large team of curators, visitor service staff and others work collaboratively at the WA Museum to provide engaging and lively experiences for visitors, enhancing the traditional static displays.
The WA Museum’s collections include several million objects and artefacts representing the natural environment, history, stories and traditions of people from across Western Australia. These include iconic sporting objects such as the winning America’s Cup yacht Australia II and an incredibly rare Megamouth shark specimen, both of which are on display at the Maritime Museum in Fremantle.
International Museum Day was established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977 to increase public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society.
