Albany audiences will receive a rare insight into the life of one of Australia’s most celebrated conservationists in the next In the Wild West lecture at the Western Australian Museum – Albany on November 15 and 16, 2012.
In the Wild West series namesake and WA Museum Fellow Dr Harry Butler will present ‘Museum collectors and carers: one collector’s story’, and share the skills and expertise he has gathered over his decades of field collection work.
Dr Butler will also reveal the techniques he has used to collect specimens for both research and display.
WA Museum – Albany Regional Manager Rachael Wilsher-Saa said it was a great honour to host Dr Butler’s lecture in Albany.
“The lecture is a great opportunity for the environmentally-aware Great Southern community to hear first-hand from one on Australia’s most respected naturalists,” Ms Wilsher-Saa said.
“We have a large group of young naturalists based at the Museum and they are all looking forward to meeting and hearing Harry.”
During his career, Dr Butler has collected mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish across the State in some very remote locations.
Dr Butler’s contribution to the conservation and restoration of Australia’s environment has been recognised with a number of public accolades including Australian of the Year in 1979, Commander of the British Empire in 1980, named a National Living Treasure in March 2012 and Officer in the Order of Australia in June this year.
Entry to the public lecture is by donation and bookings are essential; register online at museum.wa.gov.au/inthewildwest or call 9841 4844.
