Strong interest in Unearthed: Mining Stories from the Mid West has resulted in the Western Australian Museum - Geraldton extending the exhibition until Sunday 20 November 2011.
Unearthed: Mining Stories from the Mid West explores the mining history that is key to the region’s past, present and future.
Since opening on 21 May, 2011 the exhibition has helped draw record attendance to the Museum for this time of year.
Museum Regional Manager Catherine Belcher said the exhibition displays a unique range of mining stories from the region that is of great interest to locals and visitors alike.
“It explores the geological formation of the region and examines the ways in which a wide range of minerals have been mined in the Mid West,” Ms Belcher said.
“While stories from the regions past and present resonate with local residents, visitors to Geraldton have found the guided tours helpful in understanding some of the region’s industrial past and future potential.”
Ms Belcher said the interest in the exhibition has created work on legacy projects.
“Content from the exhibition will be used in new ways including on the exhibition’s website, continued development of educational resources for teachers and students in the region, and collaboration with groups such as the Mt Magnet Historical Society to transfer the research and stories into local displays.”
Unearthed: Mining Stories from the Mid West will be on display at the WA Museum - Geraldton until Sunday 20 November, 2011. A free guided tour of the exhibition is available during Museum hours; for group bookings call 9921 5080.
