Last chance to see Extraordinary Stories

  • Final week of unique Extraordinary Stories exhibition at the WA Museum – Perth
  • Start of five year partnership with the British Museum
  • Exhibition is free admission

There are now only days remaining to see the world exclusive exhibition Extraordinary Stories from the British Museum at the Western Australian Museum in Perth.

On 5 February 2012 the exhibition will close and objects will be carefully packed and transported back to London, to their permanent home at the British Museum.

Chief Executive Officer of the WA Museum, Alec Coles, said Extraordinary Stories is a stunning exhibition which contains unique objects that really do chart some of the significant moments in human history.

“The exhibition was created to celebrate the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Perth but also importantly marked the start of a unique five year partnership between the Western Australian Museum and the British Museum,” said Mr Coles.

“Visitors to the exhibition have been astonished by the exceptional objects and fascinated by the stories in the exhibition. The approval ratings for this exhibition have been incredibly high.

“There has been much anticipation for what the partnership with the British Museum will deliver next for the people of WA.  For instance, the WA Museum is working with the British Museum to bring a major Egyptian exhibition to the Museum in Perth in 2013,” said Mr Coles.

“Other planning as part of the five year partnership includes a co-created exhibition that will bring objects from both the British Museum and the WA Museum together to tell the story of Western Australia’s relationship with countries of the Indian Ocean Rim.”

In reflecting on the success of the start of this partnership and the Extraordinary Stories exhibition, Mr Coles said a highlight was the opportunities it offered the people of WA to tell their own extraordinary stories.

Throughout the last two weeks of the exhibition, children have used their creativity and worked with professional artists to tell their stories by creating an interactive artwork that is on display in the Museum’s main foyer.

“Families were also invited to share their images and memories of how they celebrated their Christmas and holiday season by posting submissions on the Museum’s website.

“It has been gratifying to see how this exhibition has engaged the people of WA. I encourage people to make the most of the final opportunity to see the exhibition and these objects, many of which have never before travelled to Australia and may never again,” said Mr Coles.
