Eight of Western Australia’s brightest innovative minds have been captured in a series of eye-popping artworks to go on display at the WA Museum – Geraldton from October 25.
The SCI-POP portraits by Perth artist Miles Noel depict past and present Western Australians responsible for great scientific innovation and discovery such as engineer C Y O'Connor, early settler and botanist Georgiana Molloy, and geologist Phillip Playford.
WA Museum – Geraldton regional manager Leigh O’Brien said the playful works showcased an important link between history, science and art in a fun, engaging way.
“Each featured scientist achieved great things for WA, many enduring great struggles and triumphs in their endeavours to improve and advance our lives,” Ms O’Brien said.
“The names of these innovators have become part of our daily lives - seen on street signs, and in the titles of landmarks and schools - but the extent to which they shaped the heritage of this State is still relatively unknown.”
Mr Noel trawled through State Library archives to breathe new life into the characters he believes have yet to fully receive the accolades they deserve.
“The project aims to raise awareness and discussion about Western Australian innovators, by Western Australians, in a format people of all ages can enjoy,” Mr Noel said.
Accompanying the artworks are entertaining fast-paced video clips featuring stop motion animation, info stills and time-lapse photography of the works’ construction.
SCI-POP will be on display at the WA Museum – Geraldton from October 25 – November 17. Entry is free.
