FotoFreo returns to the port city this week with a stunning array of international and local photographers showing their work at venues across the city and beyond.
The Western Australian Maritime Museum is proud to once again be a host venue for the Festival and take part in FotoFreo 2012: The City of Fremantle Festival of Photography from 17 March to 15 April, 2012.
WA Museum Chief Executive Officer Alec Coles said the Maritime Museum will be hosting two exhibitions by internationally acclaimed photographers which are sure to be great Festival drawcards.
“The Western Australian Maritime Museum is well known for displaying high quality photographic exhibitions. FotoFreo 2012 continues this tradition with two world class photographers in Martin Parr (UK) and Raghu Rai (India) featured,” Mr Coles said.
In keeping with its purpose of creating cultural capital, this year’s Festival has seen FotoFreo undertake new photographic projects which include a new work by Martin Parr where he visited and photographed Broome, Port Hedland and Fremantle.
“Parr’s work, which features people in WA’s port towns and cities, is ideally displayed at the WA Maritime Museum, with the thriving port city of Fremantle providing a stunning backdrop to this exhibition,” Mr Coles said.
A major focus of FotoFreo 2012 will be photography from India which includes a solo exhibition of the work by Raghu Rai, one of India’s most renowned photographers.
Mr Rai’s exhibition will feature black and white images from his portfolio over the last 20 years, some of which contribute trailblazing picture essays on social, political and cultural themes.
Mr Coles said the WA Museum is committed to creative collaborations and continues to seek opportunities to work with partners such as FotoFreo.
Both exhibitions will be on display the WA Maritime Museum from 17 March to 15 April, 2012. Entry to these exhibitions is free. Entry fees apply to the WA Maritime Museum’s other exhibits.
