Moving portrait exhibition explores stories of homelessness in Geraldton

Homelessness is one of the most pressing social challenges of our times, yet the pathways into and out of homelessness are not widely understood.

Centacare's Housing First Support Services (HFSS) in Geraldton works closely with the city's homeless community, supporting the most vulnerable, helping them into a home and then walking alongside them to help maintain their tenancy.

Journeys of Belonging documents the stories of people of Geraldton, shared through their own words and images, at all stages of this journey. The exhibition makes the invisible visible, building awareness, understanding and empathy. It raises questions of social equity and justice and serves as a call to action.

With photography by Noongar man Trevor Pickett, a Geraldton-based photographer, HFSS's Journeys of Belonging exhibition explores the transformative power of community and belonging through the lens of storytelling and photography.

Visitors have been truly moved by this exhibition since it opened in April. In a regional community such as Geraldton, where connections between people are strong, these stories can literally be very 'close to home’ for many.

The Museum of Geraldton is closing for essential maintenance from Monday May 18–Friday May 29, however Journeys of Belonging is free to visit until this date and again over the WA Day weekend until it officially closes on 2 June.
