Museum gets crafty with dinosaurs

The Western Australian Museum is hosting a free community craft day on Sunday 1 July and encouraging Perth sew-ers to come along to make toy dinosaurs.

WA Museum Project Officer Renae Woodhams said the craft day was a great opportunity for Perth’s creative community to showcase their talents and to celebrate dinosaurs in all their forms.

“Throughout July the Museum is being overrun with dinosaurs – from the Erth Dinosaur Petting Zoo performances to the many activities running throughout the school holidays. Craft-o-saurus is going to kick off the celebrations with a crafty dinosaur day,” Ms Woodhams said.

Craft-o-saurus will be a hand-made event and the Museum is encouraging hand-sewing, knitting, crocheting and other hand-made skills; sewing machines will not make an appearance.

“We’re really encouraging crafters to get back to basics, to bring their sewing and crafting materials and to share their knowledge and experience with other crafters. The lovely thing about the crafting community is the willingness to share skills and inspiration. We really want to encapsulate this through Craft-o-saurus,” said Ms Woodhams.

Staff at the Museum have already created softie dinosaurs to provide inspiration to the Craft-o-saurus participants. Fabric Brachiosaurus’, sock Tyrannosaurus Rex’s and stuffed Apatosaurus’ are starting to appear in the Museum.

“It’s been great fun creating the dinosaurs and we look forward to sharing our experiences and patterns with the people who come along.

“Craft-o-saurus is really about having a go. Whether a seasoned “sew-er” or a first timer, as long as people can thread a needle and are willing to give it a go we’re sure they will come up with something amazing,” Ms Woodhams said.

Craft-o-saurus is a free event and people wishing to participate should bring along their fabric, needles and craft supplies.

Free patterns will be available for inspiration and dinosaur sewing kits will be available to purchase for those who don’t have their own craft supplies.

Craft-o-saurus will run from 11am – 4pm on Sunday July 1, 2012 and people can come anytime during those hours. Register for the event at http://museum.wa.gov.au/whats-on/craft-o-saurus
