From Nonna with Love: Stories of Tradition and Triumph

In celebration of the rich tapestry of migration that has shaped Australia into the multicultural nation it is today—the WA Maritime Museum proudly opened From Nonna with Love: Stories of Tradition and Triumph on Saturday 27 September 2025.

This heartfelt exhibition shines a light on the extraordinary lives of Italian migrant women, affectionately known as Nonnas, whose courage, resilience, and traditions helped shape Western Australia’s cultural identity.

Between the early and mid-1900s, these women built new lives in WA, bringing with them not only their hopes and dreams but also the warmth of family, faith, and food.

Visitors are invited to step into their world through a collection of cherished photographs, treasured heirlooms, and deeply personal memories. The stories of these remarkable women offer a glimpse into how they enriched community life and passed down traditions that continue to thrive today.

At the heart of the exhibition is Nonna’s Table, an immersive installation that invites guests to gather around a traditional kitchen table. Here, short film clips projected onto the table’s surface share the voices and stories of the featured Nonnas, capturing the essence of family, connection, and cultural pride.

The exhibition also features reflections from descendants of Italian migrants, who share how they continue to honour their heritage while navigating life in a new generation. Their stories echo the enduring legacy of migration and the universal themes of belonging and identity.

Running alongside the exhibition is a vibrant series of public programs designed to bring the community together. From cooking demonstrations and passata-making workshops to storytelling sessions and cultural celebrations, these events offer opportunities to learn, share, and celebrate some Italian traditions.

Located near the Fremantle Passenger Terminal and the Welcome Walls—landmarks that hold deep significance for many migrant families—From Nonna with Love: Stories of Tradition and Triumph offers a meaningful space to reflect on the journeys that helped build our State.

Developed by the WA Museum in collaboration with local guest curator Nella Fitzgerald, this exhibition is a testament to the Museum’s commitment to community-led cultural projects that foster connection, inclusion, and a deeper understanding of our shared heritage.

Exhibition entry is included in general admission. The exhibition runs until Monday 20 April 2026.
