The queen of children's radio

It's International Women's Day, and we're tuning into a story from our History Collection about Margaret Graham MBE.

During WWII, fears of air raids led to the closure of kindergartens across Perth. Enter: Kindergarten of the Air, a new radio program that brought education and joy into children's homes.

Launched in February 1942, the show was originally planned to feature rotating presenters. But then came Margaret. Her voice and warmth were adored by children across WA, so much so that they kept her as the host.

In a male-dominated broadcasting world, Margaret broke new ground. She hosted the program from 1942 to 1960, and its success in WA inspired similar programs across Australia and around the world.
