Share your Maritime memories!

To celebrate the Western Australian Maritime Museum’s 10th anniversary tomorrow, December 1, the WA Museum is inviting members of the public to share their favourite maritime memories online.

Launched today, the Maritime Memories site will allow members of the public to share their experiences through photos they’ve captured of some of Western Australia’s great maritime moments, many of which are on display at the Museum.

Western Australian Museum chief executive Alec Coles said today the Maritime Memories project was a great opportunity for the community to be part of one of the State Museum’s significant milestones.

“Originally built in 2002 to house Australia II, the WA Maritime Museum has grown to document and display some of the State’s greatest achievements on, in, and around our vast coastline,” Mr Coles said.

“Maritime Memories is a great place for people to come together and share stories – I encourage everyone to get involved.”

The WA Maritime Museum is one of six Western Australian Museum sites across the State, and houses the Australia II yacht, Cold War-era Oberon class submarine HMAS Ovens and Jon Sanders’ Parry Endeavour.  It also tells the stories of how we as Western Australians use our coast, through innovative displays on industries such as fishing and pearling, and recreational icons such as an original ‘Sandman’ car.

An open day will also be held to celebrate the Maritime Museum’s 10th anniversary on Saturday December 1, with entry to the Museum by donation throughout the day, free activities for kids and short talks by Museum curators between 11am and 3pm.
