Students follow clues to create cryptic tour

Western Australian Museum public programs officer and Albany Heritage Festival convener, Malcolm Traill, has partnered with Great Southern Institute of Technology (GSIT) students Perri Pires and Soshana Botting to create the first Albany Cryptic Heritage and Art Trail (A-CHAT) to highlight Albany’s rich and tangible history.

A-CHAT, part of the 2013 Albany Heritage Festival, will take place at the WA Museum – Albany on Tuesday 14 May, from 10am.

The free, family-friendly event is suitable for all ages, and involves about one hour of easy walking.

Trail participants will follow a range of GPS co-ordinates, cryptic clues and photos.

GSIT Director and 2013 Business Women of the Year, Lidia Rozlapa, said the tour will greatly assist tourism in the Great Southern.

“I am very glad to have our students contributing to such a worthwhile project, the fruits of which will yield pleasure and fun to those who undertake the trail, and which will greatly assist tourism in the Great Southern” Ms Rozlapa said.

WA Museum Albany Regional Manager Rachael Wilsher-Saa said the Western Australian Museum - Albany is one of the driving forces behind the inaugural Albany Heritage Festival 2013, and the tour will be a fantastic inclusion.

“To have such a great tourism product develop from the partnering of the Institute and the Museum is a first for Albany and the region.  I am very pleased the Museum is part of the inaugural Albany Heritage Festival, and hope many people take part in and enjoy the trail,” Ms Wilsher-Saa said.

GSIT student Perri Pires enjoyed birthday treasure hunts as a child, and has developed a love of art, cryptic crosswords and geocaching.  Keen to bring these interests together, Perri enrolled in Certificate IV in Tourism at GSIT and is now integral to the development of the Museum’s Cryptic Walking Trail project.

As an Interpretive Officer at Seal Bay Conservation Park, Kangaroo Island, Soshana Botting shares information about the Seal Lion’s natural habitat, promoting ecotourism. Soshana is currently enrolled in Certificate IV in Tourism to further her skills.

Local businesses supporting the project include: Liberté at the London Hotel, Paperbark Merchants, Brava Shoes and Venice Pizza Bar and Restaurant.
