Across the river mouth, a natural limestone rockbar once separated the ocean from the fresh water.

In the 1890s, much of the rockbar was removed as the inner harbour was developed.

Walk around the port side of the Maritime Museum until you reach the boardwalk. The rocky section you can see just beneath the building is part of the former limestone rockbar.
