Let's go back to the 80s and see how times have changed!

Hair was BIG and shoulder pads were a must in fashion! Join us for a fun-filled journey in this retro quiz for kids during the school holidays and Children's Week.

Imagine a time when all kids didn't have mobile phones and you had to use a landline to talk to your friend after school! A time when VHS video was new technology, cars had cassette decks; and when TV, radio and magazines were how teens found their trends and inspiration. If you don't know what a VHS is, it's time to brush up on pop culture history!

Our quizmaster will tell you, in the 80s, everyone watched Aussie music on Countdown! Aussie kids went mad for yo-yos, Rubik’s cubes and Cabbage Patch Kids. Everyone blew out birthday candles on cakes inspired by The Women’s Weekly magazine.

Kids of today might not know how kids of the 80s called someone on a phone with rotary dials and cords. With multiple choice, interactive games and video segments, we're firing up the time machine to take young ones back forty years to a time before mobile phones, laptops and when the internet barely existed. Get ready for a journey back in time, testing 80s pop culture knowledge in a fun format that young people of 2023 can understand and enjoy.

This fun quiz show experience is a perfect pairing during your visit to the Australia II: 40 Years On exhibition.

It's A Knockout Celebrity Special: Guy Pearce, Kylie Minogue and more (1987)

Take a look at some game show inspiration from the era, courtesy of the National Film & Sound Archive’s online resources.

It's a Knockout (1985–87) was a hugely popular show on Australian television in the 1980s. It was hosted by Fiona MacDonald and Billy J Smith, and featured teams made up from local sports clubs and community groups competing for cash prizes.

This footage was recorded on 15 August 1986, but not broadcast until the following year in 1987. Look out for several mentions of the America’s Cup Defence in Perth, as preliminary races had commenced at the time of filming.
