Hear about new insights into Australia's first evidence of European arrival, the Hartog Plate.
As the first known object of European origin on the Australian continent, the Hartog Plate represents a defining moment for maritime and exploration history. Until now, the story of the famous plate has been largely based on archival and anecdotal evidence, but what does the object itself tell us?
Join Dutch conservation specialist Tamar Davidowitz from the Rijksmuseum for an illustrated lecture as she discusses the insights gained through careful study of the Hartog Plate using a variety of visual and spectroscopic techniques. By linking these insights to existing historical and archaeological records, this research has significantly expanded the current understanding of this iconic object’s complex 400-year history.
An introduction to this lecture will be given by Mr Anthony Willinge, Honorary Consul of Netherlands in Western Australia.
