On the edge of the ocean inside the WA Maritime Museum, trace the paths of the Indian Ocean’s early maritime travellers and explore the roots of Western Australia’s multicultural community.

This journey through time, begins with Aboriginal peoples, before exploring early visitors from Indonesia, European exploration and post-war migration. Discover over 60 unique artefacts including early watercraft, ceramics, maps, textiles, engravings, model ships, and more. Experience using early navigational devices - like the kamal, invented by Arab sailors to determine latitude - and understand the skills of early maritime travellers.

Learn about a vast ocean highway and how cultures, religions, goods, and ideas have been shared and traded for thousands of years.
