Oliver Gomez

Oliver Gomez is the Technical Officer for the Marine Invertebrate Zoology Section at the Western Australian Museum. He has a BSc in Biological Sciences with a minor in Molecular Biology from Murdoch University. He has been employed as a project science technical officer at the Museum since 2004. Some of the research projects that he has been involved are Dampier Woodside Project, Southern Surveyor 2005-2007, Ningaloo WAMSI projects 2006-2008, Ningaloo CERF Project 2008, Pilbara 2013, Kimberley Woodside 2011-2014, Bush Blitz 2019, Gascoyne 2022, just to mention a few. Oliver has participated in various public and engaging talks with young audiences and members of the public through the museum’s education programs (Sea Week, Tech Trails, etc.). Oliver has expertise in Porifera identification, gained over his 20-year tenure at the museum (working along with the now retired state’s expert Dr Jane Fromont). Oliver is responsible for the management of the Marine Invertebrate Zoology collection, with 20 different Phyla to manage. He also contributes to field expeditions and scientific research papers.
