North, south, east, west—find your place on the map as you sail the Indian Ocean and explore the techniques of maritime wayfinding.
Take the Navigate trail to challenge yourself with one of the toughest tasks faced by ship captains of the past—working out your position on a map. Estimating your changing latitude and longitude while travelling by sea was no easy feat. Long before satellites, GPS, and digital tools, navigation relied on skill, observation, and a bit of guesswork. Discover how sailors managed this incredible challenge—and see if you can do the same.
Get inspired by the colours and patterns of a multitude of maps. Using map papers, craft a nifty map-box and treasure map to a mythical pirate's hideaway island or create your own map-beads jewellery to take home.
