Join WA Museum Maritime Archaeologist, Corioli Souter, as she shares firsthand accounts of French excavations!

This year is the 250th anniversary of a French claim to the western part of New Holland.

In January 1998, initial proof of the claim in the form of a French écu coin dated 1766 encased in a lead seal was found at Turtle Bay, Dirk Hartog Island.

WA Museum returned to the site in March that year and using remote sensing followed by archaeological excavation, recovered a corked French wine bottle sealed with another French écu dated 1767. These artefacts were deposited by de Saint Aloüarn, commander of the 16-gun storeship Gros Ventre in 1772.

Listen to firsthand accounts of these excavations and learn more about these objects on display in the Connections gallery at Boola Bardip.
