Many of the developers showcased in the Virtual Realms exhibition are heavily influenced by other artforms, including music and cinema.

Blurring the lines will explore through a discussion the hybrid creative and collaborative nature of games. We will also look at the technological innovations that are part of the games industry such as digital tools, like unreal engine that facilitate real time rendering, which is having a huge impact on cinema and in particular, special effects.

Hideo Kojima game developers of titles such as Metal Gear, pay homage to 80’s cinematic tropes. Tetsuya Mizuguchi, curator of Virtual Realms, considers music a critical part of the design process and has even directed music videos in his past. Each of the game companies that form part of the exhibition are renowned for creating very artistic and emotionally resonant games.

Video games are the biggest industry in the world of entertainment, and while many game designers are influenced by other artforms, games as an ever-expanding industry is also influencing other entertainment Industries and artists.  Museums around the world recognise the cultural capital of games and continue to exhibit and collect them.
