Her bush fantasy world captured the imaginations of  Australians for over a century — explore May Gibbs' fascination with nature, art and storytelling.

The famous writer and illustrator of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, and Gumnut Babies lived much of her young life here in WA, where we have a large collection of her artwork.

Inducted into the WA Women’s Hall of Fame Roll of Honour in 2021, May Gibbs has left a remarkable legacy; her sense of fun, care for the environment, and irresistible and timeless interpretations of our bush are woven into our sense of place. One century later, fashion houses, ballet companies, natural history and botanical guides, cartoonists and writers continue to be inspired by May Gibbs’ beautiful creations.

Join South Perth Historical Society’s president Lynn O'Hara and explore how May’s interest in Australia’s flora and fauna, art, and storytelling are echoed in her work. Making local history appealing to the young is one factor that drives Lynn in her heritage work. Her lifetime interest and admiration of artist May Gibbs is put to good use as curator of City of South Perth’s May and Herbert Gibbs art collection.

Please note, your ticket includes a tea or coffee from Epoch café.
