Movies Screening: The Mummy

Following the success of The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) and Dracula (1958) Hammer studios turned their attention to The Mummy

Building on the 19th century gothic aesthetic of the studio’s previous horror films, The Mummy tells the story of archaeologists facing the menace of the resurrected figure of the high priest Kharis, out for revenge.

With a cast that includes genre legends Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, plus Yvonne Furneaux, and boasting a script by Jimmy Sangster, alongside Fisher’s direction, the film was one that helped Hammer define the tone of the genre for the ensuing decade.

Breaking the box office records for the studio’s Dracula, released the previous year, and inspiring three sequels The Mummy, like many Hammer films, has gained a cult status, and boasting the tagline “Torn from the tomb to terrify the world!” the film is pure Hammer horror entertainment.

Please note the film reflects the era in which it was made.
