The paper was a precious resource, it was expensive to make and therefore expensive to buy.

Envelopes are only a fairly recent invention so when writing letters to family, writers would write as much text onto the pages as they could do, and they had to be sure that the letter was folded in such a way that it would get to where it was going without getting damaged!

Take up the challenge by writing in ink with papyrus stems or drawing a picture letter to someone special then fold it ready to be addressed and stamped so that it can be sent.

Ages 8 and older. Younger children are welcome but parental assistance is required.
