Instructions for Specimen Loans for Researchers
How to request specimens and tissues for research from the WA Museum Science departments (Aquatic Zoology, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Terrestrial Zoology).
Loans
Loan of specimens are available to researchers and students for a fixed term. There are strict requirements that borrowers must agree upon to ensure specimen safekeeping once they leave the WA Museum’s custody. We can only loan the requested material to CITES or Australian Federal Environment registered institutions. Loan approvals are at the discretion of the Curator of the relevant department.
Tissue Loans
Loans of tissue samples are available to researchers and students. Samples will depend on the availability of specimen material and at the discretion of the Curator. Excess material and DNA extractions are still the property of the WA Museum and should be returned (unless agreed otherwise). Contact the WA Museum Reception team at reception@museum.wa.gov.au for information regarding specimen availability.
Visiting the collections for research
Students and researchers are encouraged to visit the WA Museum Collections and Research Centre. Visits are by appointment only during normal business hours (9am to 5pm) and can be organised via the WA Museum Reception team at reception@museum.wa.gov.au or 1300 134 081. Please identify any relevant research departments or specific curators, to ensure your request is accurately processed.
